A Brief History of VIEWMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The Murray community needed two new elementary schools by the middle of the 1960s, so in 1964, Viewmont Elementary School was built at 745 West 5720 South. Parkside Elementary was the other school constructed in the district around this time; it is located on the east side of Murray.
In choosing the name for the building, the school board elected not to name the building for an individual, setting a policy for the future. The building was designed by Bruce McDermott and constructed by Acord-Whiting Construction Company. It consisted of twelve classrooms and a multi-purpose room. The school had a number of specialized support spaces including a faculty workroom, bookroom, nurse’s room, waiting room and principal’s office. In the school’s first years, there were so many students living in the nearby Hidden Village neighborhood that only the first through fourth grades could be accommodated in the new building, with the fifth and sixth grade continuing to attend Grant Elementary School.
Viewmont is very much a neighborhood-oriented school, with Riverview Junior High School located just a stones throw away. The community is tight-knit and has an active and supportive patron base with lots of school spirit and “Eagle Pride!”
