Along with caring for the physical condition of district-supplied devices, the following tips will minimize other issues that can occur. Taking care of your device will ensure less downtime, fewer problems, and an overall better academic experience.

  • Run system updates when available - do this weekly
  • Update your internet browser
  • Avoid questionable websites and pop-ups
  • Power off your computer at the end of every workday - do not skip this

Spills on a laptop/chromebook/iPad – what to do

  1. Remain calm.
  2. This is the most important step - turn off and unplug your device immediately (closing the screen is not turning it off – you must hold down the power button for 30 seconds to power off) – do not turn it back on to see if it works or to recover files. Liquid can cause short-circuiting and damage to internal components, leading to data loss, hardware issues, and even complete failure of the device. You have a much higher chance of recovering data/files if you leave it turned off and let the technology department do the recovery.
  3. Wipe away excess water.
  4. Tip the device on its side on a towel and let the liquid drain out.
  5. Submit a helpdesk ticket.
  6. Air dry until your school tech can pick it up.
  7. Do not turn it back on!!!
