At the May 14, 2026, Board of Education Meeting, the following motion was made and passed by a vote of 3–1:
Pursuant to Utah Code § 53G-4-402, I move that the Murray City School District Board of Education provide initial notice that Liberty Elementary School is under consideration for closure effective for the 2027–2028 school year.
After the passing of the motion, the following statement was read by Board President Taeoalii:
This is a difficult moment for our district. While the data regarding birth rates and housing costs make the structural need for this decision clear, we are fully aware of the human cost. A school is more than a building. It’s a cornerstone of our neighborhoods, and a place where lifelong memories are made. Closing a school is a big deal, and we do not take that lightly.
I want to specifically acknowledge the families who have engaged with this process with quiet, thoughtful reflection. We appreciate those who look closely at the data and process the difficult realities of our enrollment numbers with grace and a deep commitment to the greater good of all Murray students. Your strength and your trust in the facts have been invaluable as we worked through this data-driven process.
Our focus now must be on moving forward together. We are not just realigning boundaries; we are weaving communities together. We are committed to ensuring that every student, teacher, and staff member feels welcomed, supported, and valued as this process unfolds.
We are providing this initial notice early in the process so the Board and community have time to evaluate the potential impacts of the proposed school closure, including possible boundary realignments. At the August 13, 2026, Board of Education meeting, the Board will consider motions related to boundary changes associated with the proposed closure of Liberty Elementary School.
An initial notice regarding the proposed school closure and potential boundary realignment will be distributed via ParentSquare and U.S. Mail on August 24, 2026, to all families who may be affected by the proposed changes.
A public hearing regarding the proposed closure of Liberty Elementary School will be held on October 1, 2026, at Liberty Elementary.
In addition, public comment will be accepted during Board of Education meetings on October 15 and November 12, 2026. The Board is scheduled to take final action regarding the proposed school closure and related boundary realignment on December 10, 2026.

Faced with declining elementary enrollment—driven by Utah’s falling birth rate and rising housing costs—the Murray City School District Board of Education is carefully evaluating potential boundary adjustments and school consolidations or closures. This work is aimed at ensuring all students continue to benefit from optimal class sizes and access to a comprehensive range of academic programs. The process also establishes a foundation for future school upgrades to better serve each community.
The Board is using a data-informed approach that considers school proximity, realistic walking and driving distances, major transportation corridors, and existing neighborhood cohesion. A central priority is to preserve established neighborhoods whenever possible while aligning school boundaries to maintain balanced enrollment across the district.
