Murray High School’s Finest: Celebrating Our 2026 Sterling Scholars

The spirit of excellence is alive and well at Murray High School. This year, our students joined the ranks of Utah’s most elite academic and artistic talents to compete in the prestigious Sterling Scholar Awards.
Since its inception in 1962 by the Deseret News and KSL, the Sterling Scholar program has worked to level the playing field between the sports arena and the classroom. While athletes have long filled trophy cases, this competition shines a spotlight on those mastering the arts and sciences, providing both statewide recognition and vital college scholarship opportunities.
A Legacy of Remarkable Achievement
Competing across 15 diverse categories—ranging from Computer Technology and Business to World Languages and Visual Arts—Murray’s scholars have proven they are among the best in the nation.
“These students... are among the best in the nation,” said Doug Wilks, editor of the Deseret News. “They speak multiple languages, do advanced mathematics, win national prizes in science, and in some cases are working toward discoveries that will better mankind.”
Each of our Murray finalists was rigorously judged not just on their grades, but on a holistic "portfolio of excellence" that includes:
-
Scholarship: Academic mastery in their specific field.
-
Leadership: The ability to influence and guide others.
-
Citizenship: A commitment to the world around them.
Service Beyond the Classroom
A cornerstone of the program is the Gail Miller Community Service Award. Sponsored by the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation, this award highlights the importance of philanthropy. As a multi-year supporter of the program, Gail Miller serves as a role model for our students, demonstrating that true success is found in using one’s talents to better the community through volunteerism.
