MCSD Board to Appoint Brian Ipson as New Business Administrator; Transition Plan Outlined

The Murray City School District Board of Education has offered the position of Business Administrator to Brian Ipson, who has formally accepted the role. Ipson was officially appointed by the Board during the June 11 meeting, and is scheduled to officially join the MCSD team on August 1, 2026.
Ipson currently serves as the Director of Budget Development for the Granite School District, where he has extensive experience managing large-scale fiscal operations, state compliance, and balancing complex institutional budgets.
He has been a key team member in the district’s capital planning, including large-scale fiscal management, balancing general fund deficits, funding long-term capital outlay priorities (like school rebuilds and renovations), and adapting to fluctuations in state and federal funding mandates. And he has experience working in field auditing and state financial services compliance.
Leadership Transition
Ipson will succeed long-time Business Administrator Richard Reese, who has announced his retirement effective December 2026. To ensure absolute continuity, financial proficiency, and adherence to strict state auditing guidelines, the district has structured a comprehensive four-month transition window.
Statements from District Leadership
Board of Education Chair Kelly Taeoalii expressed strong confidence in the appointment:
"The Business Administrator looks after the financial health of our district, which is an important responsibility when it comes to staying transparent and compliant. That’s why a smooth transition is vital, and it takes a team effort to get it right. Bringing Brian on board now allows him to work side-by-side with Richard for a few months so we don't miss a beat. We are very excited to welcome Brian’s expertise to our district team, and we are incredibly grateful to Richard for his commitment to a successful handoff."
Superintendent Jennifer Covington emphasized how Ipson’s background aligns with the district's commitment to high-quality education:
"Managing public education funds requires not just financial acumen, but a deep dedication to how those dollars directly impact students and classrooms. Brian comes to us with a proven track record of steering complex school budgets with integrity. Securing his leadership ensures that Murray City School District remains on exceptionally stable financial footing."
