A New Standard for Utah Reading: Combining SB 241 and At-Home Support

Utah recently passed SB 241: Early Literacy, a new law that strengthens the state's commitment to helping every child become a successful reader. The law establishes a statewide goal of having 80% of third-grade students reading on grade level by 2030 and expands early literacy supports for students who need additional help. It also emphasizes the use of evidence-based reading instruction grounded in the science of reading.
While our teachers work hard during the school year to build strong readers, families play an important role as well. Here are a few simple ways you can support your child at home:
1. Read together every day. Even 15–20 minutes of daily reading can make a significant difference. Take turns reading aloud and talk about the story together.
2. Talk about what you read. Ask questions like:
What happened first, next, and last?
Who was your favorite character? Why?
What do you think will happen next?
What was the main idea of the story?
3. Let your child choose books they enjoy. Whether it's fiction, nonfiction, comics, magazines, or books about their favorite hobbies, reading for enjoyment builds confidence and motivation.
4. Visit your local library. Libraries offer free books, reading challenges, and engaging summer activities for children of all ages.
5. Read throughout the day. Encourage your child to read recipes, menus, signs, maps, instructions, and other everyday print. Reading happens everywhere!
6. Limit screen time and make time for books. Setting aside dedicated reading time each day helps build a lifelong reading habit.
Thank you for partnering with us to help every Murray student become a confident, capable reader. Your encouragement and support at home make a tremendous difference.
