Double the Transitions, One Deadline: Why This Year’s Open Enrollment is Different in Murray

Murray City School District’s open enrollment window for the 2027–28 school year officially opens on Sunday, November 15, at 8:00 AM and will run through February 5 at 5:00 PM.

Please note: This is not to be confused with our annual Summer Registration for all students. Open enrollment is specifically for students who are presently attending or not attending MCSD, AND who live outside of MCSD boundaries, as well as resident families requesting an intra-district transfer.

A Unique Transition Year for 2027–28

In past years, open enrollment transitions typically applied to students moving from 6th to 7th grade (elementary to junior high) or 9th to 10th grade (junior high to high school).

However, the 2027–28 school year marks a major district transition as Murray City School District officially pivots to a Middle School structure. As part of this transition, two grade levels will move up simultaneously across campuses:

  • Elementary to Middle School Transition: Both rising 6th and 7th graders will attend Riverview or Hillcrest Middle Schools for the 2027–28 school year.

  • Middle School to High School Transition: Both rising 9th and 10th graders will attend Murray High School for the 2027–28 school year.

Because two grade cohorts are moving up together, district families with non-resident status or those seeking intra-district transfers during these specific grade shifts should pay close attention to the open enrollment window to ensure seamless registration.

"Because MCSD is transitioning two grade cohorts simultaneously for 2027–28, out-of-boundary families in rising 5th/6th and 8th/9th grades should ensure their open enrollment applications are submitted prior to the February 5 deadline."

Who Needs to Apply for Open Enrollment?

Open enrollment applications are required for families who fit one of three categories:

  1. New Out-of-Boundary Students: Non-resident families who currently live outside MCSD district boundaries and wish to enroll in a Murray school for the first time.

  2. Transitioning Out-of-Boundary Students: Current non-resident students living outside district boundaries who are transitioning to a new campus level (moving from elementary to middle school, or middle school to high school).

  3. In-Boundary Transfer Requests: Current resident families living within Murray boundaries who wish to request a school other than their designated home boundary school.

Note: Current students attending their assigned neighborhood school do NOT need to complete an open enrollment application.
